Question: How do I change the number of rings my host waits for before it answers the line?
Answer: The number of rings is controlled by a modem command in Modem initialization string. To edit this string you will need to use the Close-Up Phone Book & Modem Editor.
Step 1: Start the Close-Up Phone book and modem editor. If you are using Windows 95, open a full screen DOS Prompt. Go to the Start button -> Programs -> MS-DOS Prompt
For each version of Close-Up, follow the instructions below.
Close-Up 5.0 through 6.5
At a DOS prompt , go to the Close-Up directory (default for V6.5 is C:\CLOSUP65). At the prompt in the Close-Up directory, type CEDIT (for remote) or CHOST EDIT (for host).
Close-Up 4.0 or Close-Up 4.01
At a DOS, go to the Close-Up directory (default is C:\CLOSE-UP). At the prompt in the Close-Up directory, type SUPPORT EDITOR (for support) or CUSTOMER EDIT (for customer)
Step 2: Change the Auto Answer Command for your modem. Once the Close-Up Phone Book & Modem Editor is loaded, choose Modems from the available menus. This will display a list of modems currently supported by the software and their corresponding initialization strings. Find your modem in the list (hitting the first letter of the modem name will highlight the first modem in the list whose name starts with that letter) and highlight it. Once you have found your modem hit the plus key (+) on the numeric keypad to make a copy of the modem initialization string. Hit Enter once and change the name of the modem (for example, "AT&T 3825+ 3 rings"). You will then need to change the Auto Answer field.

To change the Auto Answer field hit Enter until the Auto Answer field is highlighted. Change the line to read ATS0=X\ (where X is the number of rings the modem should wait to answer). Hit Enter until the highlight bar disappears, and press the Escape (ESC) key twice (the exit options should be displayed). Choose "Save and Exit" to save your settings.
Step 3: Once the modem initialization string has been saved, you will need to make your change active in the program. This is done by re-running the Close-Up Setup Program:
Close-Up 6.5
At the DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory, type SETUP. When prompted to select a modem, choose the modem with the setting you just modified.
Close-Up 5.0 through Close-Up 6.1
At a DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory, type CSETUP. When prompted to select a modem, choose the modem with the setting you just modified.
Close-Up 4.0 and Close-Up 4.01
At a DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory, type SUPPORT. Go to the Setup menu and hit Enter on the Modem menu option. Select the modem with the setting you just modified.
-or-
At a DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory, type CUSTOMER. Hit ALT-M to display the customer menus. Go to the Setup menu and hit Enter on the Modem menu option. Select the modem with the setting you just modified.
The next time you load the program these changes will take effect.
