Question: Why can't I get Close-Up to work with my Winmodem or PCI-based modem?

Answer: In order for Close-Up 6.5 and earlier to provide backwards compatibility and support for DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows 95, it has remained DOS-based. As a DOS communications application we require the kind of interface with the modem that's provided by the traditional type of hardware. Both Winmodems and PCI modems do not include all hardware used on normal ISA based modems. Instead, they use software emulation of the missing hardware to cut costs. Unfortunately, the winmodem and PCI modem can't provide the type of interaction a DOS application needs. Because of this, the Winmodem and PCI modem are incompatible with the Close-Up software. Our engineering department is aware of the growing popularity of Windows-based modems and is keeping this in mind for development of future versions of the software.
