Question: How do I manually Configure Close-Up with my modem?
Answer: Close-Up allows you to manually configure Host and Remote through the available command line options. See the Command Line Options section of the Close-Up Manual for details about some of the options used for this procedure.
Note:
Make sure you have your modem information available before starting this procedure. Find out what type of modem you have, and what Com port and Interrupt Request (IRQ) your modem is configured to. See out FAQ "How do I find out my modem configuration information?"Step 1: Load a Full Screen DOS prompt from Windows. Go to your Start button -> Programs -> MS-DOS prompt. If you can see any part of the Windows 95 Desktop around the DOS prompt box, or if you can see the "MS-DOS Prompt" header along the top of the screen (see the picture below), then the DOS prompt is not in Full Screen Mode. Hit Alt-Enter or the button with four arrows pointing to each side of a red square (again, see the picture below) to make the DOS prompt full screen.

Step 2: Go to the Close-Up directory and delete the current configuration. Change directories to the Close-Up directory:
C:\WINDOWS>cd\closup65
At the Close-Up prompt, delete the current configuration file (close-up.mnu) by typing in:
C:\CLOSUP65>del *.mnu
Step 3: Choosing the correct command line options for configuration. Close-Up can use a modem configured to any of the Standard Com ports (Com1 Com4), and requires the modem to be on Interrupts (IRQ) 3, 4, 5, or 7. The Standard Com ports are defaulted to certain Interrupt settings.
Com Port |
Base Address |
Default Interrupt |
Com1 |
3F8 |
IRQ 4 |
Com2 |
2F8 |
IRQ 3 |
Com3 |
3E8 |
IRQ 4 |
Com4 |
2E8 |
IRQ 3 |
The Command Line Options used to manually configure Close-Up include:
Step 4: Configuring Close-Up. You should still be at the DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory. Close-Up Host and Remote must each be configured. We will do Remote first.
A. Configuring Close-Up Remote:
At the Prompt you will type in this command:
For a modem on one of the Standard Com ports and default interrupts, type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>cremote comtest=off com1 (or com2, com3, or com4)
For a modem on one of the Standard Com ports but not on a default interrupt you will use the following commands:
cremote comtest=off comx combase=hhh (the Base Address for your modem) comirq=x (the IRQ for your modem)
For example, a modem on Com3 (Base Address 3E8) Interrupt 5 will type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>cremote comtest=off comx combase=3E8 comirq=5
At this point Remote should load, and the Phone menu should be highlighted.
Go to the Setup menu, and highlight the Modem field. Hit Enter, and the Close-Up Modem list will appear. Select your Modem from the list, and hit Enter. If your modem does not appear on the list, See the this FAQ for additional steps.
Highlight the Baud Rate field and hit enter 4 times or until it reads 38,400.
The Com Port field should show the Com port or the IRQ and Base Address you configured with the Command Line Options.
Use the down arrow key to highlight the Modem Initialization and Control field and hit Enter.
Close-Up should attempt to initialize the modem. When the Modem Control box appears the modem response to the initialization string should be inside. It should look something like this:
AT\C0\D1\N7
OK
AT&W
OK
ATS0=1
OK
To Exit the Modem Control box, hit the Escape key (ESC).
If any of the responses returned with ERROR instead of OK the modem string you selected has an incorrect command. Make sure it is the correct modem has been selected.
If the Modem Control box just has a blinking cursor, then your modem did not respond. Verify that you have configured Close-Up using the Command Line Options and Settings. If you still do not get a response, Check through our other FAQ documents for possible causes or contact Close-Up Tech Support.
If your modem has responded properly, Close-Up Remote configuration is complete. Go to the File menu, and select Exit Close-Up. This should return you to the DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory. The configuration for Close-Up Remote should now be saved, and the Command line options will not have to be entered again.
B. Configuring Close-Up Host:
Note: Loading Close-Up Host from a Full Screen DOS prompt is not supported for normal usage. This is for configuration and testing purposes only.
At the Prompt type you will type in this command:
For a modem on one of the Standard Com ports and default interrupts, type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>chost comtest=off com1 (or com2, com3, or com4)
For a modem on one of the Standard Com ports but not on a default interrupt you will use the following commands:
chost comtest=off comx combase=hhh (the Base Address for your modem) comirq=x (the IRQ for your modem)
For example, a modem on Com3 (Base Address 3E8) Interrupt 5 will type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>chost comtest=off comx combase=3E8 comirq=5
At this point Host should load. After Host has finished loading, you should be back at the C:\CLOSUP65> prompt. To bring up the Host menu, hit the ALT-H keys simultaneously.
When the box appears the modem response to the initialization string should be inside. It should look something like this:
ATS0=1
OK
To Exit the box, hit the Escape key (ESC).
If your modem has responded properly, Close-Up Host configuration is complete. Hit the Escape Key (ESC) three times, or until you are out of the Host menu. This should return you to the DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory. To remove Host from memory, type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>chost remove
The message, "Host has been Removed" should appear, and return you to the DOS prompt in the Close-Up directory. The configuration for Close-Up Host should now be saved, and the Command line options will not have to be entered again.
