Question: Why do I get the error message "Close-Up keyboard driver not started during Windows initialization" when I load Close-Up Host through Windows 95?
Answer: This error message is commonly caused by a conflict in your System.ini file or an incorrect setting in Close-Up.
Step 1:
Make sure that Host Video is set to VGA or SVGA. If Host is set to NOT APPLICABLE this will generate a keyboard error when loading Windows 95. Please follow these steps to correct this problem.A: Reboot your PC. Chose Shutdown and Restart from Windows 95. When your PC is rebooting you should see "Starting Windows 95..." message. This should come before the Windows 95 splash screen (or Blue Clouds screen). As soon as you see that message press the F8 key. This should get you to the "Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu".
B: Select "Command prompt only" from the list of choices, and hit Enter. Your PC should boot to a C:\> prompt.
C: Change to the Close-Up 6.5 directory (the default directory for Close-Up 6.5 is: CLOSUP65), and type in:
C:\CLOSUP65>chost winvideo=vga
and press ENTER.
D: Boot into Windows. At the Command Prompt, type "WIN" and hit Enter to start loading Windows 95.
Step 2: Correct a conflict with Adobe Type Manager in the System.ini file. There is a line in the System.ini file that is altered when Adobe Type Manager (ATM) has been installed. The line changed by the ATM installation is the system driver (SYSTEM.DRV) reference. This change is often present when your Windows 95 installation is an upgrade from Windows 3.1x
Note : Restoring this line to the default setting will disable Adobe Type Manager for Windows. This means that you will not have access to ATM fonts, if you are using them. If you need to use ATM fonts, please contact Adobe for an updated version.
Edit your System.ini file, which is located in the Windows directory. In the [boot] section of the System.ini file, look for a line which reads as follows:
SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYS.DRV
This line is usually close to the beginning of the file.
Replace the line with the original system driver reference. The correct format for this line is as follows:
SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV
Save your changes to the System.ini file, and reboot your machine.
Step 3: Correct a conflict with a nonstandard mouse driver in the System.ini file. Some mouse drivers change the mouse line in the [386enh] section of your system.ini. For Close-Up host this line must read:
MOUSE=*VMOUSE, MSMOUSE.VXD
If this line reads "MOUSE=*VMOUSE" you will get the following corruption:
[boot] system.drv=system.drv drivers=mmsystem.dll user.exe=user.exe gdi.exe=gdi.exe sound.drv=mmsound.drv dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll comm.drv=comm.drv shell=Explorer.exe ;eyboard.drv=keyboard.drv ;; Close-Up V6.5 Modifications ;; keyboard.drv=C:\CLOSUP65\CUPWIN7 orgkeyboard.drv=keyboard.drv fonts.fon=vgasys.fon fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon ;86Grabber=vgafull.3gr ;; Close-Up V6.5 Modifications ;; 386Grabber=C:\CLOSUP65\CUPWIN13 ;isplay.drv=pnpdrvr.drv ;; Close-Up V6.5 Modifications ;; display.drv=C:\CLOSUP65\CUPWIN11 ;ouse.drv=mouse.drv ;; Close-Up V6.5 Modifications ;; mouse.drv=C:\CLOSUP65\CUPWIN6 orgmouse.drv=mouse.drv *DisplayFallback=0
To correct the file corruption see the "How do I know if the Close-Up references in the System.ini file are correct?" FAQ, and use the Reference Guide to make the necessary changes to the lines that are corrupted.
Step 4: If you are getting the keyboard error and also getting "Close-Up enhanced mode drivers for Windows not loaded during Windows initialization" then our reference in the System.ini [386enh] section is incorrect. Edit the System.ini file and make sure the reference looks similar to this:
[386Enh] ;; Close-Up V6.5 Modifications ;; device=C:\CLOSUP65\CUPWIN9
The line DEVICE=CLOSUP65\CUPWIN9 should not be remarked with semicolons.
Step 5: Close-Up References are missing from the System.ini file. If you do not see any lines for Close-Up Modifications in your System.ini file, then re-run the Close-Up Setup program, or see the "How do I know if the Close-Up references in the System.ini file are correct?" FAQ.
