Hard
Drive Security
There are two
ways iClose-Up Clients can gain access to an iClose-Up Server’s hard
drive. The first is through iClose-Up
Access Points which is the quickest way.
Secondly iClose-Up Clients can gain access to an iClose-Up Server’s hard
drive through Microsoft Share Points.
If you want to have someone send or fetch files from you, you have to
have an iClose-Up Access Point or a Windows Share Point to allow them access. iClose-Up by default installed an iClose-Up
Access Point probably on your “C” drive.
This allows file transfer access to all the folders on the “C” drive.
We strongly suggest that you put passwords on your iClose-Up Access
Points. Please remember to give the
passwords to anyone you expect to connect in and access your hard drive.
You can add iClose-Up Access Points and modify existing ones by right
clicking on the red iClose-Up triangles in the lower right of your screen and
selecting “Security for This Computer”, and then pressing the “Settings” button in the “iClose-Up
Hard Drive Security” panel.
iClose-Up for its own use puts in “START MENU” as a hidden Access
Point. iClose-Up uses this Access Point
to allow iClose-Up Clients to start applications on the iClose-Up Server when
running Remotly where the desktop is not shared. It is generally not necessary to put a password on this Access
Point.
If you remove
or unbind “File and printer sharing for
Microsoft Networks” you will need to use iClose-Up Access
Points if you want to give an iClose-Up Client connecting to your iClose-Up
Server access to the iClose-Up Server’s local hard drive. Even if you do not remove or unbind “File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks” from the iClose-Up Server it is a good idea to make iClose-Up Access
Points for incoming iClose-Up Clients to use when accessing your hard
drive.
If you want to
limit access through Microsoft Share Points then put passwords on the Microsoft
Share Points, or remove the Microsoft Share Points or remove or unbind “File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks”. To alter Microsoft Share
Points run Windows Explorer select the folder or drive letter you want to alter
and then right click. Now if you
have “File and printer sharing for Microsoft
Networks” you will see “Sharing” as an
option. Select this option to alter
Microsoft Share Points.
Using iClose-Up on the Internet
If you are
using iClose-Up on the Internet you may not have or will want to remove or
unbind “File and printer sharing for
Microsoft Networks”.
If you are concerned about security on the Internet most people feel
removing or unbinding “File and printer sharing
for Microsoft Networks” (which gives access to Microsoft
Share Points) is the safest configuration.
You would remove or unbind “File and
printer sharing for Microsoft Networks” from the
Dial-Up adaptor (if you get on the Internet by modem) or from your Network
adaptor (if you get on the Internet by a constant connection like Cable Modem,
xDSL, T1 or ISDN). If you are using
Windows 95/98/Me it is pretty easy to remove or if you prefer unbind “File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks”. If you are using Win NT/2000/XP
it is generally better to unbind (verses removing) “File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks”. Note that it is much harder
to do on Win NT/2000/XP then it is on Windows 95/98/Me.
