Getting you started with File Transfers (Copy & Paste):

There are two ways to do File Transfers in iClose-Up.  There is the Quick File Transfer method, or the Explorer File Transfer method.

The Quick File Transfer method allows you to transfer a single Folder, or, one or more Files by specifying a Source and Destination.  You can specify the Source and Destination by browsing, or by hand typing the path.  After specifying the Source and Destination you start the transfer and when finished all the transfer screens disappear.  We recommend the Quick File Transfer when you have a few files to transfer and you want to get going quickly  (suggested for most users).

The Explorer File Transfer method has one or two Explorers up on your screen.  The Explorer method allows you to transfer one or more Folders, or, one or more Files by the Copy & Paste technique.  After you Copy & Paste your files, the Explorers are still up on screen allowing you to see as well as organize the two computers.  We recommend the Explorer File Transfer when you are transferring a lot of files, comparing files/folders on both computers, or you are organizing one or both computers  (suggested for advanced Windows users).  Note both the Quick File Transfer method and the Explorer File Transfer methods transfer files at the same speed.

Quick File Transfer method:

You start a Quick Transfer from the iClose-Up List.  To bring up the iClose-Up List Double click on the red iClose-Up triangles in the lower right of the screen.  Now click on the name of the computer you want to do file transfers with.  The name will be in the Connected section at the top of the iClose-Up List.  After you click on the name, a list will come down, click on “iClose-Up Quick File Transfer”.  There is now a very simple 4-step procedure for you to follow:

1.  Select by clicking on one of the round circles, the type of transfer you want, a Send, a Fetch or a Synchronize.

2.  Click the “Browse for Source Files…” button to select a folder or file(s).  You will see a dialog window showing you Folders and/or Files.  Browse to the Folder or File you want to transfer and hi-light it by clicking on it.  Now click on the iClose-Up Copy button.

To copy multiple Files, hi-light the first File you want to transfer.  Now hold down the “Ctrl” (Control) key on your keyboard and while holding this key down continue to click with your left mouse button on any other Files you want to transfer.  Now click on the iClose-Up Copy button.

3.  Click the “Browse for Destination Folder…” button to select a destination Folder for the files or folder you are transferring.  After hi-lighting your destination folder, click on the Ok button.

4.  Click the “Start Transfer” button.  Your files will now transfer and when finished the transfer screens will disappear.

Explorer & Quick File Transfer method combined:

You can also combine the two transfer methods.  You can iClose-Up Copy a file or folder in Explorer and then select “iClose-Up Quick File Transfer” in the iClose-Up List to select the destination.

In Explorer find the File or Folder you want to send and select it with your pointer then Single Click the Right mouse button.  Now select iClose-Up Copy.  To select multiple Files or multiple Folders for transfer select the first File or Folder you want to transfer.  Now hold down the “Ctrl” (Control) key on your keyboard and while holding this key down continue to click with your left mouse button on any other Files or Folders you want to transfer, now Single Click the Right mouse button.  Now select iClose-Up Copy.

Now click on the name in the iClose-Up List for the computer you want to transfer with.  A list will come down, click on “iClose-Up Quick File Transfer”.  Click the “Browse for Destination Folder…” button to select a destination Folder for the files or folder you are transferring.  After hi-lighting your destination folder, click on the Ok button.  Now click the “Start Transfer” button.

iClose-Up Synchronize:

If you selected Synchronize by clicking on the round circles in front of “Synchronize file(s)/folder(s)” you can update two Folders with files that have the latest time and date.  You can also select a few files to be synchronized.  The technical definition of an iClose-Up Synchronize, is that the “newest version of any file(s) you pick will go to both sides”.  iClose-Up has two synchronize options:

Synchronize All Files:  This is the most common choice.  This option copies folders or files you selected (bi- directionally) so both PC’s are updated, identically, (both sides will have the most recent time and date).  This choice is used for synchronized backups.  Lets look at an example to further illustrate this choice.  My home PC#1 has a folder with files a, b, c, and my office PC#2 has a folder with files a, b, d, after synchronize both PC’s have files a, b with latest time & date and files c, d.

Synchronize Common Files:  This option copies folders or files you selected (bi-directionally) so both PC’s are updated, but this option only copies files that have the same name on both PC’s.  (Files Common to both sides.)  Lets look at another example to further illustrate this choice.  My home PC#1 has a folder with a two files b, c, and my office PC#2 has a folder with a lot of files a, b, d, e, f, g, h, I, j, k, l, m, now I don’t want all the office files on my home PC, so when I use Synchronize Common Files, then synchronize works just on file “b” both PC’s will have “b” with the latest time and date.

Explorer File Transfer method:

You can use Microsoft’s Explorer or iClose-Up’s Explorer, it does not matter which.  You can use just one explorer, or two, side by side.

When do you use Windows vs. iClose-Up for file transfers?  iClose-Up was designed for transfers on modem and Internet connections, therefore it is much faster then Windows on these connections, therefore you should use iClose-Up (copy & paste) for transfers on modem and Internet connections.  On a network or your local hard drive you can use Windows (copy & paste) for transfers, as you are used to doing now, unless you wish to Synchronize folders or files then you will want to use iClose-Up’s Synchronize on your network or local hard drive.  For example in writing this online manual I work on different computers at home and at work.  I keep the manual files I am working on, on a high capacity removable disk, but I use the iClose-Up’s Synchronize transfer option to synchronize the files to the local hard drive of the computer I sit down at.  Then when I am finished I again use iClose-Up’s Synchronize option to synchronize my removable disk.

iClose-Up Synchronize

There are times you may wish to update two Folders with files with the latest time and date.  iClose-Up has two synchronize options that allow just this type of synchronization over the Internet, between two computers connected by modem or two computers on your network.  You can synchronize when doing hand transfers in explorer, and by script for execution at night when you are asleep.

Definition of the iClose-Up Synchronize feature:  Newest version of what ever you pick will go to both sides.

                  You now have two options:

1)  Synchronize All Files:  This is the most common choice.

2)  Synchronize Common Files:  This option copies folders or files you selected (bi-directionally) so both PC’s are updated, but this option only copies files that have the same name on both PC’s.
