How to Install the iClose-Up Proxy Software:

You should also read the section in this help manual on Proxy Servers if you are using a Proxy Server or Internet Connection Sharing if you are using Internet Connection Sharing.

iClose-Up Proxy software is not a replacement for Microsoft Windows Proxy Software or any other brand of Windows Proxy Software.  iClose-Up Proxy software can go on the same computer that is running Windows Proxy software and allow iClose-Up Clients to connect through the Windows Proxy software to iClose-Up Server computers behind the Windows Proxy computer.

Read this section if you are going to install the iClose-Up Proxy software on either a Windows Proxy Server or on a Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Server.  Download the iClose-Up Proxy software.  You can get the iClose-Up Proxy software “iclose-upproxyinstall.exe” by downloading it from the Norton-Lambert web site at www.iclose-up.com.  Put the iClose-Up Proxy software on either the Windows Proxy Server or on the Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Server you use to get on the Internet.  Now run the “iclose-upproxyinstall.exe” program on the Windows Proxy Server or on the Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Server.  This will install the iClose-Up Proxy software.    That’s all you generally have to do on the Windows Proxy Server or on the Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Server.  This will by default give you up to 50 iClose-Up computers behind the Windows Proxy Server or the Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Server.

By default the iClose-Up Proxy software is set to handle 50 simultaneous connections from outside iClose-Up Clients, to iClose-Up Server computers inside.  Note that the default of 50 (this can be set higher) incoming connections has no effect on out going iClose-Up connections.  So with incoming set to 50 you could have at the same time say 100 outgoing connections from iClose-Up Clients on the inside, to iClose-Up Server computers on the outside.  The outgoing connections are handled by the Proxy or Internet Connection Sharing software, were as the incoming connections are handled by the iClose-Up Proxy software.  From now on even after you restart your computer the iClose-Up Proxy software will start automatically.

If you want to change any of the iClose-Up Proxy default values then go to the Start menu select Programs then select iClose-UpProxy then click on Proxy Config.  This will run the “icloseupproxyconfig.exe” program.  In the Configure tab are the following two entries:

Internal Proxy TCP/IP Port (default is port 53700):  There is generally no reason to change this port number.  This is the port number iClose-Up uses to communicate with the iClose-Up software.

TCP/IP Port Range:  This is the range of ports that iClose-Up will use for incoming connections.  The default is set at port 53701 to 53750, giving a total of 50 ports for incoming iClose-Up connections.  You can optionally pick ports in a different range if you want.  You can have less then 50 ports or more than 50 ports, these are just the default values we picked.   You can generally pick any numbers between 49200 and 65500 as your port numbers.

Min  (default is port 53701):  Is the minimum value of the range.

Max  (default is port 53750):  Is the maximum value of the range.  By default the iClose-Up Proxy software is set to handle 50 simultaneous connections from outside iClose-Up Clients, to iClose-Up Server computers inside.  Note that the default of 50 incoming connections has no effect on out going iClose-Up connections.

If you want to change these default values do so and then press the Save button.  Next close the configuration window.  Now for these changes to take effect, since the iClose-Up Proxy software was already running you will need to stop the iClose-Up Proxy software, and then restart it.  There are two ways to do this.

First, you can simply restart the computer that is running the iClose-Up Proxy software.

Or secondly you can stop the iClose-Up Proxy software.  In Windows 95/98/Me you do this by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete and highlighting the program “icloseupproxy” then pressing the End Task button.  Now run the iClose-Up Proxy software again “icloseupproxy.exe”.  In Windows NT/2000 you need to end the Service.   In Windows NT go to Settings, Control Panel, Services select “iClose-Up Proxy Support” and press the Stop button..  Now restart the service by pressing the Start button.   In Windows 2000 go to Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services select “iClose-Up Proxy Support” and press the Stop button..  Now restart the service by pressing the Start button.

From now on even after you restart your computer the iClose-Up Proxy software will start automatically.

Firewall:  If you using a firewall in front of the Windows Proxy Server or the Internet Connection Sharing Server and you are using iClose-Up Proxy software on that server then you will need to have the following ports open:

Ports: 53701 through 53750  both TCP and UDP for inbound and outbound traffic (used by iClose-Up).

Port:   3039   UDP for inbound and outbound traffic (used by iClose-Up).

Port    389  TCP for inbound and outbound traffic (used for Close-Up Internet Name Server (CINS)).

Port:   53    UDP for inbound and outbound traffic (used for DNS (Domain Name Service) to locate CINS on the internet, this port is also used by your web browser).
