Problem
with Modem Disconnecting: Windows Me
(Millennium) disconnects your modem after about 20 minutes. Windows Me has a built in timeout to
disconnect an idle modem connection after a specified time to avoid incurring
excessive long distance fees from a connection you might not be using. You can set the amount of time the
connection sits idle before it disconnects as well as the amount of 'traffic'
that is considered idle traffic. By
default the timeout is set to 20 minutes and the idle traffic is set to 5% of
the connection speed. This means if you
have a 56k connection and you have less than 2.8k going across the line Windows
will disconnect the modem after 20 minutes.
To change
these settings, Click on the Start menu, select Settings, select Control Panel.
Next double click on Dial-up and Networking Settings. Right click on the connection you
want to adjust the timeout information for and select Properties from
the drop down list. Click the far right
tab labeled Dialing. The
settings are located at the bottom of the window and can be adjusted from
there.
