Problem
Solving
Problem with Simultaneous Internet
and Modem connections: If you have a
Constant (always on) connection to the Internet but you lose the Internet when
you connect by Modem to another computer, then read on.
You are probably losing the constant
Internet connection because the TCP/IP protocol is confused since it does not
have a Gateway specified to route traffic.
There are two solutions depending on how your constant connection is
configured.
Click on the Start menu, select Settings, select Control
Panel, then double click on
Network.
For Windows 95/98/Me machines, select
TCP/IP -> your
network card name
(because you are getting to the Internet through this network card) then click on the Properties button, now select the IP Address tab.
For Windows NT machines, click the Protocols tab, then select TCP/IP, click the Properties button and select from the drop down menu the network card you reach
the Internet over.
If “Specify an IP address” IS selected, then
look at the Gateway field (in 95/98/Me systems you will need to select the Gateway tab) to
see if there is a Gateway IP address entered.
If no address is entered, contact the Network/Internet administrator who
put in the constant connection to see what IP address can be entered here.
If “Specify an IP address” is NOT selected
but instead “Obtain an
IP address automatically” is selected then you will
need to modify your iClose-Up Phone Book for each Modem entry you wish to be
able to call without losing your Internet connection. You can modify the iClose-Up Phone Book by double clicking on the
red iClose-Up triangles in the lower right of your screen which brings up the
iClose-Up List. Select one of the modem
entries you wish to modify and then select Edit Entry. About half way down the screen will be an entry “Use Gateway on Remote Network: Yes” you should select it and on the
right of your screen you will be able to select “No. Do not use Default Gateway
on the Remote Network” selecting this will change the “Yes” to “No” in “Use Gateway on Remote Network: No”. Now select the “Save & Close” button on the lower
right. Remember to repeat this changing
“Yes” to “No” for all modem entries in your iClose-Up List that you want to use while
not losing your simultaneous Internet link.
